DESCRIPTION
Originally from China Jasmine is known for its pleasant fragrance, Jasmine is a scrambling, evergreen, perennial vine that forms dense mats over trees, fences and other structures. Flowers are pink in bud and white up to 25mm when mature. Leaves are opposite, pinnate, usually with seven long-stalked or egg-shaped leaflets.
DISTRIBUTION
Although the Jasmine fruit are small enough to be distributed by a wide range of birds, it doesn’t often produce seed and usually spreads through its extensive underground runners.
HABITAT
Usually found in scrub, deserted gardens, wasteland and forest margins. Commonly found in warmer frost-free areas in the North Island. Sometimes further South, although it is not very frost tolerant. The quick growth and longevity of Jasmine means it competes with slow-growing natives. It is shade tolerant and can survive in a wide range of soil types, poor drainage and moderately salty areas.
IMPORTANT
Because of the ability to regrow from the rhizome system, it is essential to follow up with a second spray programme once any regrowth or fresh growth has become evident.
PHYSICAL CONTROL
Dig out and hand-pull smaller plants ensuring all the root fragments and pieces of stem are removed.
